Khokhloma

 

a village in Kovernino Raion, Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. Khokhloma has been famous since the 17th century as the center of Khokhloma wood painting. The village became part of Semenov District of Nizhny Novogorod Province in the 18th century;since 1936 it has been part of Gorky Oblast.

And probably the most eye-catching of all is the turquiose ensemble in Khokhloma painting, a Russian painting style know for its curved details and inclusion of flowers, berries, and leaf in its patterns.
These bowls are decorated with the traditional pattern called khokhloma, named after the village that created it.
On every visit to Russia in the past few years, the couple have made a "pilgrimage" to the Khokhloma factory, involving a 12-hour train ride to the village of Syomino, to bring back handcrafted wooden kitchenware.
