King, Samuel (Archer)

(1828–1914) aeronaut; born in Tinicum, Pa. Credited with encouraging transatlantic flight that led to successful dirigible crossings, he made his first balloon ascent at Philadelphia (1851). He never managed to cross the Atlantic via balloon, but he made hundreds of ascensions and several successful flights to gain wind and temperature data for the Army Signal Service (1885).
