In central WA, southeast of Tacoma; organized Nov 2, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Yakima County. Name Origin: Probably from a subtribal name of the Yakima Indians. Meaning uncertain, with 'shoal people' most appropriate, but 'land of bread' has also been suggested, as has 'gray gravel bank,' said to refer to a gravel bank on a river shoal
