Koolau Range

(kō`əlou'), mountain chain, extending northwest-southeast, E Oahu island, Hawaii; rises to 3,105 ft (946 m) in Konahuanui. It is cut by two scenic passes, Nuuanu Pali and Waimanalo Pali, which shorten the route between E and W Oahu.

The links at recently refurbished Koolau Golf Club in Kaneohe may be the most challenging 18 holes in the nation (the USGA slope rating is - yikes - 162), but its setting beneath the serrate cliffs of the Koolau Range also makes it one of the most spectacular.
This windward beach, backed by the southern tip of the Koolau Range, gets strong onshore winds and a lot of kite fliers.
The observation area itself is new, though the views -- south across Honolulu to the Pacific, north across Punchbowl to the Koolau Range -- are as serenely spectacular as always.
