a city and port in Spain, in Galicia, on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of La Coruña. The administrative center of La Coruña Province. Population, 189,700 (1971). La Coruña is a railroad hub, a bunkering base for transit ships, and a major commercial fishing center (the port’s freight turnover was 5.2 million tons in 1969). It has petroleum-refining (about 4 million tons), shipbuilding, fish-canning, textile, and chemical industries.
