On southwestern border of WI, northwest of Madison; organized Mar 1, 1851 from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For the village of the same name,from the French name for an Indian game baggataway, from a resemblance they saw to their tennis game, played with a racquet that resembled a bishop's crozier or cross.
