In east-central MI, east of Flint; established Sept 10, 1822 (prior to statehood) from Oakland and Saint Clair counties. Name Origin: From the local spelling of French la pierre 'the stone' or 'flint', probably a transliteration of an Indian name for the Flint River, for its rocky bed.
