Palmas, Las

(läs päl`mäs), city (1990 pop. 373,846), capital of Las Palmas prov., Spain, on Grand Canary. The harbor nearby, at Puerto de la Luz, is the chief port of the Canary Islands and the busiest in Spain. Industries include fishing, fish processing, and tourism. The city was founded in 1478; still standing is a house where Columbus stayed in 1492. The city's role as a shipping point between South America and Europe contributed greatly to its growth.

the principal city and port of the Canary Islands, located on Gran Canaria Island. Administrative center of Las Palmas Province; a part of Spain. Population, 263,300 (1969).

Las Palmas is an important junction for transatlantic communications and a bunkering and repair base of international significance. The turnover of goods in the port (La Luz) was 5.2 million tons in 1969, including 4.2 million tons in imports, primarily oil. The food industry is an important branch of the local economy. Las Palmas, founded in 1478, is a winter resort.
