a city and the administrative center of Lebedin Raion, Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR; situated on the Vil’shanka River (Dnieper Basin). It has the Lebedinskaia railroad station. Population, 29,000 (1970).
Lebedin has a piston-ring factory, a machine-assembly plant, a brickyard, a creamery, a fruit and vegetable cannery, and a meat-packing plant; it also produces clothing, plastic accessories, and haberdashery. A teachers college and medical school are located in the city. The Lebedin State Station for Breeding and the Artificial Insemination of Agricultural Animals is in Lebedin Raion.
