Leeuwarden

(lā`vär'dən), Frisian Ljouwert, city (1994 est. pop. 87,500), capital of Friesland prov., N Netherlands. It is the center of an agricultural and dairying region and has a noted cattle market. Manufactures include food products, clothing, artificial silk, and tin. Chartered in 1435, Leeuwarden was (16th–18th cent.) the center of a goldworking and silverworking industry. Many structures date from the 16th and 17th cent., notably the huge brick Oldehove Tower. The large Frisian Museum is there.

Leeuwarden

 

a city in the Netherlands; administrative center of the province of Friesland. Population, 88,700 (1970). It is a meeting point for canals and railroads and has food-processing (primarily dairy) industry and metalworking enterprises. A technological economics institute is located in the city.
