Leshii

 

in the folk beliefs of the East Slavs (particularly Russians and Byelorussians), a forest spirit hostile to people. Belief in the leshii originated with the ancient Slavs, probably during the period when they moved to the woodlands, as an expression of their superstitious fear of impenetrable forests.
