, former province (c.47,000 sq mi/121,700 sq km), NE China. The capital was Liaoyuan. It was one of nine provinces created in Manchuria in 1945 by the Chinese Nationalist government.

a city in China in Kirin Province on the Tungliao Ho (basin of the Liao Ho), near the Erhlung Shan reservoir. Population, 200,000 (1958). It is the center of the Liaoyuan coal basin. Coal mining is the principal industry; there is also machine building and the production of paper, textiles, and vegetable oil.
