lifestyle

the manner in which an individual or group lives (see Polsky, 1969). Whilst the term has been used in a variety of contexts, it has recently been used especially in connection with the practice and discourses of ADVERTISING agencies and market research organizations. Conceptions of lifestyle’ have become increasingly important in the marketing and advertising process since World War II, with the development of new forms of popular entertainment and new vehicles of mass communication, such as radio, cinema and television. The emergence of CONSUMER CULTURE and new consumer goods (e.g. cars, cigarettes, cosmetics) required new ways of selling. In the advertising process the success of a campaign increasingly relied upon the active identification of the consumer with the image of the product and advertisers have come to recognize the importance of understanding human motives and desires as an aid to effective communication and marketing.
