Light fixtures

Light fixtures

An assembly that is part of a buildings electrical system that produces and controls light. The lampholder secures and energizes the lamp connected to the power supply; the reflector controls how the light is distributed; ridged baffles at the bottom of the fixture reduce the intensity of the light; and the diffuser controls the quality of the light. Louvers redirect the emitted light and shield the light source from view at certain angles. Parabolic reflectors spread, focus, or otherwise redirect the light. Lenses are used to focus or disperse the emitted light. Types include recessed, semirecessed, surface-mounted, pendant-mounted, and track-mounted. Fixtures within a building consist of three basic types: recessed, when lamps are housed above the ceiling, and the lens is flush with the surface; surface-mounted, when fixtures are attached and project from the wall or ceiling; and pendant fixtures, which are suspended from the ceiling by a rod or chain, such as a chandelier.
