terrorist organizations

those organizations which exist specifically to engage in the pursuit of political goals by acts of TERRORISM. Such groups may either be organized by the state – STATE TERRORISM – or directly opposed to the state. Terrorist organizations have, however, a wide range of goals and aims. Their primary motivation may be nationalist (e.g. the Irish Republican Army), ideological (e.g. the Red Brigade), single issues (e.g. Animal Liberation Front) or religious (e.g. Islamic Jihad).
