Llanelli
(hlänĕhl`ē, lănĕth`lē), town (1981 pop. 45,336), Carmarthenshire, S Wales, on the estuary of the Loughor (Burry) River. The town's industries include tin-plate works and steelworks. Pottery, glass, and chemicals are also made. Coal was formerly mined and exported from Llanelli; the docks closed in 1951. Nearby is the coastal town of Burry Port, where Amelia EarhartEarhart, Amelia, 1897–1937, American aviator, b. Atchison, Kans. She was the first woman to cross the Atlantic by airplane (1928) and the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic (1932).
