Loire-Atlantique

 

(formerly Loire-Inferieure), a department in western France, on the Bay of Biscay. Area, 7,000 sq km; population, 897,000 (1972). The prefecture is Nantes. Loire-Atlantique is an important industrial port region (Nantes-St. Nazaire). There is shipbuilding, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, aircraft industry, and the manufacture of chemical and food products. Loire-Atlantique is a major region for the cultivation of cereal crops. There is viticulture, fruit growing, stock raising, and fishing.
