, city (1990 pop. 12,667), capital of Lozère dept., S France, on the Lot River. Mende is a tourist resort. It was originally a small Gallo-Roman city that became an episcopal see in the 5th cent.

Lozère

 

a department in southern France, in the Massif Central. Area, 5,200 sq km. Population, 71,000 (1972). Administrative center, Mende. Lozère is an agricultural, primarily livestock-raising, region; its food-processing, metalworking, textile, and sawmilling industries are not highly developed.
