Lupescu, Magda

(mäg`dä lo͞opĕ`sko͞o), 1896?–1977, wife of Carol IICarol II,
1893–1953, king of Romania, son of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie. While crown prince, he contracted a morganatic marriage with Zizi Labrino but divorced her to marry (1921) Princess Helen of Greece.

 of Romania. Her given name was Elena. Carol renounced (1925) his succession to the throne for her, but after becoming king (1930) he installed her as his official mistress. She was accused of exerting a corrupting influence on Romanian politics; part of her unpopularity was due to her Jewish origin. Lupescu shared Carol's exile from 1940 and was married (1947) to him in Brazil, becoming Princess Elena. After his death (1953) she lived in Portugal and in France.
