Lutetian Stage

 

(from “Lutetia,” the Latin name for Paris), one of the stages of the Middle Paleogene system (period) in Western Europe. It was identified in 1883 by the French geologist A. Lapparant in the vicinity of Paris. The type section is represented by “coarse limestones” that contain bivalves and nummulites. Deposits of the Lutetian stage are widespread in Western Europe, where they correspond to a time of extensive transgressions by the sea. In the USSR the term “Lutetian stage” is not ordinarily used; the Simferopol’ stage and the bottom strata of the Bodrak stage in the Crimea correspond to this subdivision. Analogues of the Lutetian stage are also found in the Caucasus, Turkmenia, Kazakhstan, and Western Siberia, where they are represented by limestones, marls, and clays with numerous foraminifera.

Paris sits over many abandoned underground mines that once produced Lutetian limestone for building.
So it can be concluded that oil shale layers in these three basins in the Dunhua-Mishan Fault Zone were all deposited at the same time, in the Lutetian. As seen from the evolution of Fushun, Meihe and Huadian basins, oil shale was mainly accumulated in the period when the lake level was the highest, the tectonic setting the most stable and the terrigenous supply the least.

K/Ar dating of glauconite found within the blue earth has yielded an estimated age of 44.1 [+ or -] 1.1 Ma (Lutetian, lower middle Eocene) for the sediments (Ritzkowski, 1997).
Vertebrates from the basal horizons (Ypresian to Lutetian) of the Cucullaea I Allomember, La Meseta formation, Seymour (Marambio) Island, Antarctica.
Cuttings samples, in contrast, contain principally Lutetian and Ypresian benthics and planktics all the way down to 1569.7 m, at which point these caved forms are outnumbered by Cretaceous taxa.
