Lyman series:see spectrumspectrum,
arrangement or display of light or other form of radiation separated according to wavelength, frequency, energy, or some other property. Beams of charged particles can be separated into a spectrum according to mass in a mass spectrometer (see mass spectrograph).

Lyman series() A series of spectral lines of atomic hydrogen with wavelengths in the far ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet regions of the spectrum (see hydrogen spectrum). The Lyman alpha (Ly α) line occurs at 121.6 nm and the Lyman limit at 91.2 nm. Ly α emission and absorption lines occur, for example, in the spectra of quasars.
