MEID

(Mobile Equipment ID) A 56-bit number that uniquely identifies a CDMA cellphone. In the 2005 time frame, the MEID began to replace the 32-bit ESN (electronic serial number). The equivalent number in a GSM or UMTS cellphone is the international mobile equipment identity (see IMEI).

The cause of the problem is that many of the iPads were shipped with duplicate MEIDs (A Mobile Equipment Identifier), which is a unique number that is used to identify a mobile device when it connects to the network.
