(bŭn`dər), city (1991 pop. 159,110), Andhra Pradesh state, E central India, a port on the Bay of Bengal. In the 17th cent. it was a center of French, British, and Dutch trade. It has a carpet-weaving industry; other products include rice, oilseed, and scientific instruments. The town is a district administrative headquarters, a railroad terminus, and an educational center.

New Delhi, Muharram 20, 1435, Nov 23, 2013, SPA -- A cyclone that claimed seven lives and displaced thousands in south India had weakened, but was still bringing heavy rains in the region, officials said Saturday, according to dpa/ Cyclone Helen, with winds of around 90 kilometres per hour (km/h), moved in from the Bay of Bengal to make landfall near the city of Machillipatnam in Andhra Pradesh state Friday afternoon.
"It would move west-northwest for some time, then west-southwest and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machillipatnam close to Ongole around morning of 22 November."
