Makalu

a massif in NE Nepal, on the border with Tibet in the Himalayas

Makalu

 

a mountain peak in the Great Himalayas, 20 km southeast of Mount Chomolungma (Everest). Elevation, 8,470 m. It is composed primarily of granites. There are glaciers (up to 15 km long) on the slopes. East of the mountain is the gorge of the Arun River that crosses the Himalayas. The depth of the gorge from the crest to the river bed is as much as 7,300 m (probably the deepest in the world). Makalu was first scaled by French mountain climbers in 1955.
