Manteuffel, Edwin, Freiherr von

Manteuffel, Edwin, Freiherr von (ĕtˈvēn frīˈhĕr fən mänˈtoifəl), 1809–85, Prussian field marshal. He served in the Danish War (1864) and was appointed Prussian governor in conquered Schleswig. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded brilliantly, and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) he distinguished himself. Manteuffel commanded (1871–73) the German army of occupation in France and from 1879 until his death was governor of Alsace-Lorraine.
