(Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, www.mit.edu) The largest research university in the U.S. devoted to science and technology. Founded in 1861 to meet the challenges of the newly industrialized world, MIT has been involved in developing advances in military defense, computers, telecommunications and artificial intelligence.
