Mechanics lien

A lien filed by a contractor or tradesman for unpaid work performed on a project, which becomes an encumbrance on the property until released by agreement, paid, or dismissed by action in the courts.

The Fourth Circuit, in Construction Supervision Services, ruled that "inchoate" unperfected mechanics or materialmans lien rights in North Carolina are "interests in property" that could be perfected post-petition and have priority over pre-petition perfected security interests under the North Carolina Lien Law.
Mechanics and materialmans liens generally attach to the debtor's real property.
