McCracken, James
(1926–88) tenor; born in Gary, Ind. A fireman's son, he was a steelworker and sang on Broadway before making his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1953. After performing in Europe, he made a triumphant return to the Met in 1963 in the lead of Otello and became a leading tenor there.The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography, by John S. Bowman.
