In southwestern NC, east of Asheville; organized Dec 19, 1842 from Burke and Rutherford counties. Name Origin: For Maj. Joseph McDowell (1756-1801), a hero of the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780) during the Revolutionary War and U.S. representative from NC (1797-99)
