Mesabi Range

a center of the mining industry in northeastern Minnesota (USA), in the Lake Superior region. The most important American iron-ore basin and the North’s primary raw-material base for ferrous metallurgy. Annual extraction is about 50 million tons. In addition to rich hematite ores, lowgrade taconites (ferruginous quartzites) are mined and processed into concentrates. The key centers are Virginia and Hibbing. Exports pass through the ports of Duluth and Two Harbors.
