The river’s numerous sources rise on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Oriental and flow onto the Orinoco llanos, where they form the Meta. During the summer there is severe flooding. The average discharge is 2,500 cu m per sec. The river is navigable from its mouth to the village of Marayal (below the city of Puerto Lopez) and higher, in the flat sections of the sources of the Guatiquia and Guayuriba rivers. The principal ports are Puerto Carreno (at the mouth) and Orocué.
