Midlands

a plain in southern Great Britain. It is bounded in the north by the Pennine Mountains, in the west by the Cambrian Mountains, and in the south and southeast by the Cotswold and Chiltern hills. The Midlands are composed primarily of marls and Triassic clays. There are coal deposits. Elevations are generally between 100 and 150 m (maximum, 278 m). The plain is drained primarily by the rivers of the Trent and Severn basin. The remnants of oak, beech, and hornbeam forests cover the hills. Pastures and grain plantings predominate.
