Maslov, Mikhail Stepanovich


Born May 19(31), 1885, in Narva; died June 3, 1961, in Leningrad. Soviet pediatrician; academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1935); major general in the medical service.

In 1910, Maslov graduated from the Military Medical Academy; in 1921 he was named professor and supervisor of the subdepartment of pediatrics of the academy and simultaneously (from 1938) professor at the Leningrad Institute of Pediatric Medicine. His principal works were devoted to dietetics, digestion, and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver in children, as well as the study of reactivity in children and constitutional anomalies. He made an important contribution to the study of the origin, mechanisms of development, clinical characteristics, treatment, and prophylaxis of pneumonias and septic and toxic states. He instituted in clinical practice new methods of examining patients with congenital defects of the heart and worked out indicators for surgical intervention in such cases. He created an important school of pediatricians, including A. F. Tur, P. I. Il’inskii, V. F. Znamenskii, and A. V. Valentinovich. He was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the J. Purkyne Czechoslovak Medical Society. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.

This would appear to be another of those "prime years." Russian meteor expert Mikhail Maslov, who has closely studied the evolution of the Perseid stream in space, predicts a "significant increase of Perseid background activity, with a zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of 150-160." By comparison, last year's Perseid shower reached a peak ZHR of about 90, judging from the counts submitted to the International Meteor Organization (IMO) by observers worldwide.

Another reputable meteor scientist, Mikhail Maslov of Russia, has made a "very cautious" estimate for a ZHR of 100/hr, but with the disclaimer: "It is difficult to estimate expected intensity of the outburst due to the lack of past observed cases of activity from the given comet meteor shower, as well as due to very small size of the comet itself and unknown level of its past activity ...
There was a fairly narrow range of predictions for the expected time of peak activity, (1) due to the 1900 and 1907 dust trails, on October 8: 19:52 UT (William Cooke & Danielle Moser, NASA MSFC); 20:01 UT (Jeremie Vaubaillon, IMCCE, Paris); 20:12 UT (Esko Lyytinen, Helsinki, Finland); 20:13 UT (Mikhail Maslov, Novosibirsk, Russia), and 20:36 UT (Mikiya Sato, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan).
Mikhail Maslov's Polikarpov I-15, I-16 and I-153 Aces (9781846039812, $22.95) joins others in the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series, covering the world's first mass-produced fighters produced for World War I battle.
Two other proven meteor sleuths, Jeremie Vaubaillon (IMCCE, France) and Mikhail Maslov in Russia, independently reached the same conclusion.
