Miller, Dorie

(1919–43) Pearl Harbor hero; born near Waco, Texas. An African-American messman aboard the USS Arizona, he voluntarily manned a machine gun and downed four Japanese planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor (1941). He was awarded the Navy Cross and was killed in action in 1943.
