Ger. Mitau, city (2011 provisional pop. 59,449), in Latvia, on the Lielupe River. It is a major rail hub and a trade center for grain and timber. The city grew around a fortress established by the Livonian Knights in the 13th cent.

On 23 December 1916, during the Mitava operation, one unit reportedly responded to orders to attack with shouts that "we'll defend, but we won't attack" (689).
The latter made a forced landing on September 28, 1915, south of Mitava not far from Babit Lake and was then delivered to Lebedev's factory.
