Modus

a term used in logic, jurisprudence, and philosophy.

In traditional (syllogistic) logic, varieties of syllogisms (inferences) defined by the number, form, and relationship of their premises and conclusions are called modi. Modus is also used in modern formal (mathematical) logic. For example, the modus ponens is nothing more than the rule of inference, or the rule of detachment—that is, a deductive rule according to which a conclusion B can be drawn from premises of the type A and A ⊃ B (⊃ is the symbol of implication and is read “implies”).
