Altitude tours provide enchanting views of the Bernina massif and the surrounding wild glacial landscapes of Pers and Morteratsch. At 2,978 metres above sea-level, Diavolezza, in winter, also boasts Switzerland's longest glacial descent on skis.
Under the watchful eye of the Pole star, we slowly climb towards the Bernina pass, passing Morteratsch (1,896 metres) and Bernina Diavolezza (2,093 metres) before finally reaching the highest point of the entire train network of the Rhaetian Railway near the Ospizio Bernina station at Lago Bianco (2,253 metres).
Such signs of glacial 'full retreat' also strike tourists as ominous when they pass through the Bernina range, since they look like local cries for "Help!" The RhB takes an active role in informing tourists on board about cultural attractions like the Morteratsch glacier, but, to Atzmuller's knowledge, such announcements offer no comment on glacial melting.
