Multibucket Excavator

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Multibucket Excavator

a continuous-operation excavator whose working member is made up of several buckets that move along a closed path. Multibucket excavators are classified according to the design of the working member (chain and rotary types) and the method of excavation (transverse-scoop types, in which the direction of motion of the working mechanism is perpendicular to the direction of motion of the machine,

and longitudinal-scoop types, in which the direction of motion of the working mechanism is the same as that of the machine). The revolving types can work on faces in several directions— that is, transversely, longitudinally, and diagonally.

Multibucket excavators are used to remove rocks that have not previously been loosened, since only the unique designs of the multibucket excavator can act as a loader by filling a bucket with loose (free-flowing) material that extends up to twice the length of the bucket, rather than shearing off a chip. Multibucket excavators are used in combination with railroad and conveyor transportation, cantilever spreaders, and bridge conveyors.
