On eastern border of IA, west of Davenport; established Dec 7, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Des Moines County. Name Origin: Variant name for the Mascouten tribe of the Potawatomie Indians. Meaning of the name is uncertain, but locally believed to be 'burning island.'
