Using data collected by NASA's STEREO spacecraft, researchers at Southwest Research Institute and the National Solar Observatory have developed the first detailed images of solar wind structures as plasma and other particles from a coronal mass ejection (CME) travelled 93 million miles and impacted Earth.
Frank Hill of the National Solar Observatory in Tucson and colleagues used ground-based detectors to monitor changes in the solar surface due to the reverberation of sound waves inside the sun.
Dr Frank Hill, of the US National Solar Observatory, said: "This is highly unusual and unexpected.

Three scientists, David Hathaway (NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center), Giuliana de Toma (High Altitude Observatory), and Matthew Penn (National Solar Observatory) presented possible explanations of the Sun's odd behavior at July's meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Physics Division in Bozeman, Montana.
Washington, Aug 19 (ANI): Scientists at Southwest Research Institute and the National Solar Observatory have developed the first detailed images of solar wind structures as plasma and other particles from a coronal mass ejection (CME) travelled 93 million miles and impacted Earth, thanks to NASA's STEREO spacecraft.
"It is possible that the current sunspot cycle, cycle 24, was seeded with magnetic fields from cycle 23, or even an earlier cycle, cycle 22," says Matt Penn of the National Solar Observatory in Tucson.
