Ellesmere Port,

town (1991 pop. 78,800), Cheshire West and Chester, W central England. Ellesmere Port is located on the Manchester Ship Canal near its junction with the Shropshire Union Canal and the entrance into the Mersey estuary. It is an important oil-refining and distribution center for imported commodities such as iron ore and grain. It also has dye works, auto manufacturing, and various light industries.

It was the construction of the canal which enabled goods from Ellesmere in Shropshire to be distributed across the UK, transforming the tiny riverside hamlet of Netherpool into the Port of Ellesmere and later Ellesmere Port.
