Primarily on Manhattan Island at the southeastern tip of NY, west of Long Island; original county, organized Nov 1, 1683. The county is coterminous with the borough of Manhattan, part of New York City. Name Origin: Named in 1664 when Col. Richard Nicolls seized the Dutch territories for King Charles II of England, who granted them to his brother, James (1633-1701), Duke of York and Albany, later James II, King of England. Lands east of the Hudson River were called Yorkshire, later New York. Called Nieuw Amsterdam by the Dutch
