Harold Nicholson has been behind bars since 1997, when he pleaded guilty to being paid $300,000 by Russian intelligence agents for passing along national defense secrets.
Harold Nicholson "was allowed to serve time in a federal prison in Oregon to be near his family.
The indictment states that since 2006, Nathaniel Nicholson - whom FBI agents arrested Wednesday in Eugene - traveled to San Francisco, Mexico, Peru and Cyprus - specifically, a TGI Friday's restaurant there - to meet with Russian Federation officials.
The younger Nicholson allegedly visited his imprisoned father on several occasions to obtain additional information that was to be passed along to Russian officials.
The indictment states that Russian officials asked Nathaniel Nicholson to share with them clues that led to his father's 1996 arrest, and how much federal investigators knew about Russian spying.
The money Nathaniel Nicholson brought back to Oregon after the meetings was distributed to family members at his father's direction, the indictment states.
Harold Nicholson's father, longtime Eugene resident Marvin Nicholson, said he was not aware of his grandson's arrest until Thursday afternoon.
We didn't know anything about it," Marvin Nicholson said.
They didn't find anything, so we thought that was the end of it," Marvin Nicholson said.
Marvin Nicholson said his grandson attended a Eugene middle school for one year before moving to Corvallis to live with his mother.
