Dutch settlement at the mouth of the Hudson River and on the southern end of Manhattan island; est. 1624. It was the capital of the colony of New Netherland from 1626 to 1664, when it was captured by the British and renamed New YorkNew York,
city (1990 pop. 7,322,564), land area 304.8 sq mi (789.4 sq km), SE N.Y., largest city in the United States and one of the largest in the world, on New York Bay at the mouth of the Hudson River.

New Amsterdam

 

a city in Guyana. Population, 23,000 (1970). The city is a port at the mouth of the Berbice River. It is linked by railroad to Georgetown, Guyana’s capital. New Amsterdam is the trading center of an agricultural region (sugarcane, rice, fruit growing, livestock raising). Agricultural products are exported. The city was founded in 1740.
