On the central eastern border of MS, south of Columbus; organized Dec 23, 1833 for Choctaw cession in 1830. Name Origin: For the Noxubee River, which runs through it; from Choctaw probably 'stinking water.'

While driving down Highway 45 it would be easy to miss sleepy Macon in Noxubee County, Mississippi. The population is only around three-thousand people and the city itself is only 1.5 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau.
