Nyiragongo

(nyē'rägông`gō), active volcano (c.11,400 ft/3,475 m), S VirungaVirunga
, volcanic range of mountains, E Congo, N Rwanda, and SW Uganda, central Africa, NE of Lake Kivu. It extends along the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley and separates the basins of the Nile and Congo rivers.

, NW of Nyiragongo. Lava from Nyiragongo's eruptions has at times reached Goma and Lake Kivu. There are several old craters, easily accessible and noted for their picturesque scenery and flora. Local legends associate the volcano with the place of expiation of guilty souls.

Nyiragongo

 

an active volcano in the Virunga group in Zaïre, north of Lake Kivu. Height, 3,470 m. Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano in the form of a regular truncated cone with a well-like crater about 1 km in diameter, with a molten lava pool at the bottom. There are two older side craters on the northern and southern slopes. The volcano has been active since 1927; its activity is limited to the main crater.
