There are several old craters, easily accessible and noted for their picturesque scenery and flora. Local legends associate the volcano with the place of expiation of guilty souls.
an active volcano in the Virunga group in Zaïre, north of Lake Kivu. Height, 3,470 m. Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano in the form of a regular truncated cone with a well-like crater about 1 km in diameter, with a molten lava pool at the bottom. There are two older side craters on the northern and southern slopes. The volcano has been active since 1927; its activity is limited to the main crater.
