Nyíregyháza

(nyē`rĕjhä'zŏ), city (1991 est. pop. 114,596), NE Hungary. It is a county administrative center, a road and rail junction, and the market for an extensive agricultural region. Light industries include canning, distilling, and food processing. Known in the 13th cent., the city was destroyed during the Turkish occupation (16th cent.) of Hungary but was rebuilt in the 18th cent. Its museum contains gold relics dating from Avar times.

Nyíregyháza

 

a city in northeastern Hungary; administrative center of the megye (county) of Szabolcs-Szatmar. Population, 70,600 (1970). The city is an important railroad junction. The leading industries are tobacco, rubber, and food-processing (a large vegetable cannery, production of vegetable oil, and flour-milling).
