Oimiakon Plateau

 

a plateau in the Yakut ASSR, in the basin of the upper course of the Indigirka River, between the Suntar-Khaiata and Tas-Kystabyt ranges.

The plateau consists mainly of low-mountain massifs and ridges composed of sandstone and shale with small intrusions of granite. It is covered with a sparse larch forest and, above 1,200 m, with mountain tundra. The Oimiakon Depression along the Indigirka River is the coldest place in the northern hemisphere; with average temperatures falling to –50°C and an absolute minimum of about –70°C.
