Orkut

An earlier social networking site sponsored by Google and named after Google developer Orkut Buyukkokten. Launched in early 2004, membership exceeded 40 million users within two years. The majority of Orkut users were from Brazil, India and Japan, and the service was hosted in Google's Brazilian facilities. Facing massive competition from Facebook, in 2014, Orkut was shut down.

Lists of Friends
Orkut members listed and rated their friends; for example, "Best Friends," "Acquaintances," etc. If a friend was dropped from a user's list, that user was dropped from the friend's list. If an Orkut member placed another member on a "Crush List," both members were notified when the other member did the same. See social networking service.
