Judi Dench, 84, plays Old Deuteronomy, nearly 40 years after she had to pull out of the 1981 premiere with an Achilles injury.
The trailer features a number of cats who are eyeing their group leader, Old Deuteronomy to select them and send to travel to Heaveside layer where they will have a new life.
With a stage filled with felines, the show tells the 'tails' of a selection of cat characters, before the oldest and wisest cat, Old Deuteronomy, chooses a cat to visit the heaven-side layer and be reborn.
Adapted from TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, on just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
The fast-paced moves never stopped, as the Jellicle Cats took it in turns to tell their stories to their wise leader Old Deuteronomy, played by David Lockwood, who engaged brilliantly with the audience.
As a character, he is the second in command of the tribe, after Old Deuteronomy. When Old Deuteronomy is away, he is in control and tries to keep things together.
Over the week, I was able to enjoy four shows: a special version of Ahrens and Flaherty's 'My Favorite Year' at 54 Below starring Adam Chanler-Berat; Boublil and Schonberg's 'Miss Saigon,' because a good friend, Marcus Choi (we worked together in 'Flower Drum Song' and 'Allegiance' on Broadway), would be playing The Engineer that night; 'KPOP,' to support Julia Abueva, a young musical-theater actress I've known since she was 9 years old; and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats,' to support Quentin Earl Darrington as Old Deuteronomy (who'll be playing Agwe in the 'Once on This Island' revival) and Aaron J.
Quentin Earl Darrington has great authority as Old Deuteronomy, while Daniel Gaymon's athletic Macavity, Andy Huntington Jones' regal Munkustrap, and all the other members of the Jellicle tribe are flying high--now and forever.
It's the one night of the year when their leader Old Deuteronomy can choose one cat to be "reborn".
Audiences are set to be dazzled by choreographer Faten El Gredly's delightful dance sequences and get the opportunity to meet Old Deuteronomy and the Magical Mr Mistofeles.
44) Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats,'' starring Elaine Paige as faded "glamor cat'' Grizabella; John Mills as Gus, the Theatre Cat, and Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy. The performance includes Paige's showstopping turn on the ballad "Memory.'' Filmed and staged for TV at London's Adelphi Theatre in August 1997.
Cameron Ball's Macavity was dangerous and daring and who wouldn't want a cuddle with Nicholas Pound's Old Deuteronomy, who granted Grizabella a new life.
